Some jubilees are multifaceted. For instance, Philippe Boesmans, in the very year he was 75, pushed coquetry as far as entering the Larousse encyclopaedia. On 23 November he will be received under the very Parisian dome of the Académie des Beaux-Arts where he will be awarded the Composition Prize for his work as a whole. It is in this general jubilation that Cypres is releasing the present album: an opus that brings together pieces composed over four decades and traces Boesmans? æsthetic evolution as well as the painless separation of a young serialist from its founding dogma. If Boesmans is the unquestioned pedestal of a new generation of leading opera composers, one who has reconciled the general public with a flagging genre, he is also a fabulous composer of chamber music, as this disc shows. His world is made of frivolity and gravity, joie de vivre and nostalgia, he is a wonderful orchestrator, an appetising virtuoso.
